Environmental Considerations in Design and Construction

■Initiatives for decarbonization, low carbon, and resource recycling

In response to the rising public interest in climate change and sustainability, the Group is proposing, planning, constructing, and operating ways to help customers decarbonize, conserve energy, and use green energy. We have also formed alliances with other companies to introduce LED lighting in local governments and other public facilities, and to introduce autonomous, distributed energy equipment that also serve as disaster prevention measures and CO2 reduction measures. From now on, we will continue to contribute to our customers and society through our business utilizing technologies that realize decarbonization, low carbon, and resource recycling.

■As a “ZEB planner”

In light of the national energy policy and other factors aimed at realizing a low-carbon society, the Group applied to and was registered on February 23, 2018, under the “ZEB planner” registration system, which was launched with the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative (SII) as the secretariat.

In 2020, leveraging our track record in CO2 reduction projects, we completed a project aimed at converting a public building to ZEB (ZEB Ready*). This was the first time in Japan that a company was responsible for ZEB renovation of the main building of a local government.

* ZEB Ready: A building with energy consumption reduced by 50% or more

■Training of specially controlled industrial waste Managers

In order to promote the proper processing of specially controlled industrial waste such as asbestos, we have added the specially controlled industrial waste manager qualification to the curriculum for new employee training since fiscal 2011, and are working to strengthen the training of personnel responsible for management. Currently there are 427 certified employees. (As of July 1, 2025)

■Proper processing of asbestos

Given the significant impact of asbestos used in buildings on the human body, scatter prevention measures are required for renovation work on buildings that use asbestos.

The Group is strengthening our initiatives to protect the environment while ensuring safety by contracting all asbestos work to professional contractors.

■Management of industrial waste processing contractors and proper processing

The current Act on Waste Management and Public Cleaning stipulates that the prime contractor who directly undertakes the relevant construction work from the client is the entity discharging waste, and the prime contractor’s responsibilities are clearly stated.

For this reason, the Group has set a target for all locations to contract with the finest waste processing companies (for example, companies that have obtained environmental management system certification). Also, we continue to implement thorough management of manifests as in the past, and conduct on-site inspections of processing (collection and transportation, intermediate disposal, and final disposal) facilities on an ongoing nationwide basis.

■Proper processing and recycling of waste air conditioning refrigerant gases (CFC gases)

Waste CFC gas is properly processed based on the Act on Rational Use and Appropriate Management of Fluorocarbons, and since fiscal 2010, in cooperation with our business partners, we have established a recycling flow for high-purity waste CFC gas.

Amount of CFC gas recovered

Year of implementation Amount recovered
Fiscal 2022 33,394kg
Fiscal 2023 30,898kg
Fiscal 2024 27,106kg

Initiatives in Business Activities/Offices

The Group is promoting initiatives to protect the global environment through business activities, such as energy conservation proposals to customers and proper processing of waste, as well as eco-activities in our offices.

■Environmental contribution through purchase and use of copy paper made from thinned timber

Aiming to reduce the amount of copy paper we use, since 2010 the Group has been purchasing copy paper made from forest thinnings. In fiscal 2024, the total company-wide purchase volume was approximately 2.7 million sheets (A4 size equivalent), and thus we contributed to the promotion of forest thinning equivalent to approximately 2.2 hectares and to carbon offsetting of approximately 1,139 kg.

■Eco-caps

As part of our ESG promotion activities, we are implementing an eco-cap recycling program in which we collect plastic bottle caps from our offices and homes and provide them to recycling organizations. The eco-caps we provide are converted into recycled plastic raw materials, and the proceeds used for a variety of social contribution activities, such as children’s cafeterias, support for people with disabilities, environmental education for children, and providing vaccines to children around the world.

In fiscal 2024, our Group as a whole provided approximately 61,000 PET bottle caps, totaling 480 kg, to recycling organizations.

Going beyond small-scale efforts to reduce plastic waste, since this an activity that contributes to various forms of social good, we will continue to participate going forward.
